Notes from the Heat Dome

Everything Is Happening and Occurring

I will not — canNOT — lie to you. I am one beer deep at the pub. I am watching the men’s 2024 Euros (like the World Cup but just Europe) and it’s got me feeling like it’s 2010 again and I’m in my childhood bedroom watching the men’s World Cup in South Africa while listening to Passion Pit’s song Sleepyhead. It’s got me wanting to go to the store and buy a soccer ball and dribble around the park like I’m 12 again playing for the Glen Ellyn Lakers. But, alas. It’s a little too hot for me to go outside right now. I gotta stay inside in the air conditioning. Why, you may ask? BECAUSE CHICAGO IS IN A HEAT DOME. It’s only 87 degrees today, but it’s been in the 90s ALL WEEK. I’ve been bringing a change of clothes and extra underwear to work (sweaty girls, DO YOU FEEL ME??)

Summer is officially upon us, and what are WE DOING? It’s back sweat season. It’s already the back half of June. Pride month is in her twilight (SAD). Time is passing a little TOO quickly. (Oh boo hoo, I’m alive and I get to enjoy a Chicago summer and I’m young and can walk around and drink aperol spritz whenever I want. I am making myself sick.)

Hmmmmm… maybe I’ve been enjoying everything happening and occurring SO much that it feels like time is passing quicker than normal. SO many things have been happening — from new books, new music, new TV shows, new trends — it’s so hard to KEEP UP. And I feel like the summertime is the most fun time of the year to stay ~in the know~. In winter, I’m just trying to stay warm and drink red wine. In summer, we’ve GOT PLACES TO BE. We have THINGS TO DO. We have reading to read! We have shows to WATCH! We have LOOKS to SERVE! We have drinks to DRINK!!

To conclude whatever I’m saying, I hope you gift yourself time to allow yourself to chew on your musings for the summer. I mean, please, my GOD, stay up to DATE on things — but also let yourself unplug and enjoy the heat dome (however you celebrate). Whether you’re in the pub watching European men throw temper tantrums on a footie pitch, or enjoying the Chicago lakefront, or laying in bed, I wish you comfort and happiness.
